Desert Trip (Day 10)

We were back on the road today heading for the third stop on our desert adventure, Borrego Springs, CA. We left the Island RV Resort in Lake Havasu about 8:00 AM under generally clear skies with a few threatening looking clouds off to the west.

The road south was clear however, and very little traffic down to Blythe, CA where we joined I-10. The road south from Parker was through an Indian reservation called the Colorado River Indian Tribe (C.R.I.T) Reservation. It was created to move a number of smaller Indian tribes from more desirable lands and give them land no one else wanted at that time. Things changed somewhat with the control of Colorado River water; the land is now heavily irrigated and a lot of it is under cultivation in hay and/or alfalfa or something similar. There is no evidence though that any of this has improved the life of the Indians still living there. The housing is marginal and there was no evidence of any commercial or social community activity.

After heading west on I-10 towards Palm Springs, we turned south and travelled down the west side of the Salton Sea, a landlocked body of water with no outlet. About half way down we turned west again and headed up into the mountains toward Borrego Springs. Along the way, we again saw many RVs, campers, and trailers dry camping in the desert. All seemed to be heavily involved in off-road recreation activities using dirt bikes, jeeps, dune buggies, and 4-wheel quad vehicles. We have seen this almost everywhere we have been in the desert and is apparently very popular and appealing to a large number of motorized recreation enthusiasts.

The town of Borrego Springs is very small, but has a number of resort facilities. We are staying at The Springs at Borrego Springs, a top-notch RV resort with a 9-hole golf course on the grounds. The resort has its own mineral hot springs that is the source of water for its pool and spas. The resort is full and we were lucky enough to get a cancellation that matched our schedule.

The town is also completely surrounded by Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in CA. We haven't had a chance to look around just yet, but it appears there will be an abundance of recreational and sightseeing things to do. We just drove through the town, had lunch at a local hot spot (Carlee's), bought a few groceries and 4 boxes of girl scout cookies outside the store and went back to the RV. Judy also did another load of laundry that should get us home with clean clothes.

We will be here for 4 nights and will leave Thursday morning, planning to make it to Lemoore NAS in Hanford (near Fresno) by Thursday night. We should arrive back in Nevada City by mid-afternoon next Friday. Based on the weather and snow pack in town we may have to park the RV at the Nevada City Fairgrounds RV park to unload.
