Spring Training 2019 - Day 49

It was a great day for spring training baseball.  The weather was perfect -  high 70s, sunny and no wind. And the Phillies won 11-5.

It was back to the RV for take out pizza for dinner.  Things are winding down with the last game tomorrow.  Tuesday is a get ready day and we leave on Wednesday for St. Augustine, FL, our first stop on the journey home.

Spring Training 2019 - Day 25

The Phillies played the Baltimore Orioles today.  The game ended in a tie as a rookie with no name on his back hit a two run homer with two outs in the 9th inning to tie the game at 5-5.  In spring training, teams do not normally play extra innings if a game is tied after 9 innings.

After the game we travelled over to Safety Harbor on the way back to the RV park.  Safety Harbor is one of our favorite towns here.  There is a very nice downtown area with lots of good restaurants and ambiance.

We had dinner at a great pizza place with wood-fired pizza in a casual setting.  We eat here whenever we can. After dinner, we had ice cream at a Coldstone Creamery nearby.

Florida Spring Training 2018 - Day 20

Baseball today. The Phillies beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-6.  We went to Frenchy's at Clearwater Beach after the game for dinner and a sunset - both excellent.

It was opening day for the Phillies and they were welcomed by the mayor, the city council and assorted other politicians and staff from the City of Clearwater for the 71st consecutive year of spring training in Clearwater for the Phillies and the 15th year in the present stadium.  And again, the Phillies Phanatic, the best mascot in baseball, and possibly all sports, was present to entertain the crowd and harass the visiting team.

There was also a moment of silence for Roy Halladay, former Phillies pitcher, whom died in an airplane accident last year

The traffic over the causeway into Clearwater Beach was heavy and the town was packed.  But it was Saturday night and the weather was beach-friendly.  And, spring break isn't really here yet.  It looks like it is going to be a busy time here this year.  Despite the traffic, our meal at Frenchy's was again outstanding and the sunset was beautiful.

Florida Spring Training 2017 - Day 29

The Phillies played the Baltimore Orioles today and won 7-5.  It was an exciting game that the Phillies won with a 4-run rally in the 8th inning.  Once again, the Phillies prospects outplayed the regulars who are for the most part off to a slow start.

The regular players who are guaranteed to make the team generally take a more relaxed approach to spring training and usually don't particularly put up impressive statistics in spring training.  Unfortunately for the Phillies the last few years this casual approach has carried over into the season with predictable results.  The rookies and minor league players who are close to the major league on the other hand are trying very hard to do well and impress the staff on their quest for the big leagues.  There appears to be a good crop of Phillies minor league  players who are just about ready to move up.  A casual approach by the major leaguers who will mostly make up the team this year will not serve them well this year because there a lot of talented players waiting to take their jobs.  We'll see how the regulars do as spring training progresses.  More to follow later.

We are changing RV sites tomorrow.  We originally made our reservation from March 1st to April 1st.  When the spring training schedule was released, we noticed it was starting a week early.  We were able to make a reservation for that week but not at the site we had reserved.

No baseball until Friday.  Tomorrow will be a set-up day at the new site and Thursday will be a sightseeing day.  The weather remains great.  The locals say we are experiencing May-like weather and today was a record high at 85 degrees with very low humidity.  We are not complaining.
