We were up at 5:00 am this morning to see the dory boats launch into the surf at Cape Kiwanda. The weather was clear and fairly warm. By the time we got to the beach at 5:30 AM, some boats had already launched and were out of sight. We saw several other boats launched - a procedure that requires a tow vehicle/boat trailer driver, a boat helmsman (or woman), and a third person in the water to position the boat once it is released from the trailer. All in all, a complicated, cold & wet undertaking. The boats launched this morning will be returning early this afternoon and will be retrieved from the water as described in yesterday's post.
After the boat launching, we went for a short drive to try and find a way to the north side of the cape, on the other side of the sand dune we had climbed yesterday. We succeded in finding another beach access on the north side called McPhillips Beach, a beautiful, wide flat beach crossed by several streams running off of the high sand dunes behind the beach and along the road. We walked on the beach for about an hour and then ate breakfast at the Pelican Pub and Brewery, a great restaurant right on the beach near the boat launching area.
After breakfast, we walked south on Kiwanda Beach for about 1 1/2 miles and then back. That gave us about 4 miles of hiking before 11:00 am, pretty good for a couple of 70-year-olds. (Actually, Judy is 70 today, but Pat still has 2 1/2 months to go.
After lunch (again at the Pelican Pub and Brewery), we drove down to Lincoln City to look around. It was a nice, 15 mile ride and the weather was great. After a short tour of the city, we drove back to the RV Park and had pizza for dinner at the local pizza parlor and went to bed early.
