On The Road - Oregon Coast Trip

We left Nevada City on Thursday, August 6th at 10:30 AM for the Oregon Coast. We got started a little later than planned due to establishing our learning curve for hooking-up our tow vehicle (Judy's VW Bug). All went well however and we had a good run up Highway 5 until we got to Lake Shasta. It then started raining hard and continued pretty much off-and-on until we came off the mountain into Ashland, Oregon.

We spent the night at a nice Oregon state park along the Rogue River, (Valley of The Rogue State Park), just short of Grant's Pass. You can really tell the difference between the Oregon and CA state parks. In Oregon, most state parks offer full hook-ups, are well maintained, and fully staffed. I am afraid the CA parks are even going to get worse due to the state budget problems. Most are in great locations but already sufffer from aging infrastructure, lack of capital facility upgrade plans, inadaquate preventive maintenance and staffing. Apparantly, the latest budget will actually shut down 1/3 of existing CA state parks - a very sad affair indeed.

We are on our way today to Cape Kiwanda RV Resort near Pacific City on the coast. It is about half way between Tilamook and Lincoln City. We will continue north on Highway 5 to Salem, then head west over the mountains to the coast. We drove about 315 miles yesterday in 6 hours and it should be a little less today. The weather this morning is a little overcast - but no rain.
