Cape Kiwanda - Oregon Coast Trip

Today we drove 272 miles from Valley of the Rouge State Park to Pacific City, Oregon. We hitched up The Bug, also known as the Green Machine, to Big Mother and were on the road (I-5 North) by 9:30 am. The weather was mostly overcast all day, with some misty periods, but no rain. We climbed over many high mountains and then dropped down into the Willamette Valley, a huge agricultural area which was the goal of many of the pioneers on the Oregon Trail during the 1800's.

We turned left at Salem, Oregon, heading west across more farmlands, then traversed the Coastal Range through a Sitka Spruce rain forest on a narrow road which got narrower as we got closer to the coast, and which included four one-lane bridges. We were getting a little nervous about our wide RV, but Big Mother got us through to Route 101 with the Green Machine pushing as hard as she could.
Pacific City is home to the Dory boat fishermen, huge sand dunes, spectacular rock formations and beautiful beaches. Cape Kiwanda RV Park sits on the edge of a wild dunes area (right behind us). The RV Park is filled with RV's and RV'ers of course, and also...many, many rabbits. They are not wild rabbits, but tame "Easter Bunny" type rabbits that have been left to multiply. They are all over the place and look very well fed. We are wondering why the coyotes, who live in the wild dunes area, don't sneak in at night and have a feast. Apparently, the rabbits are clever at hiding out after dark.
