We had a very early departure from Sacramento on Southwest Airlines to Tampa, FL. The flight was uneventual and after a stop in Denver, we arrived in Tampa around 4:00 PM local time. We then rented a car and drove to our hotel in Clearwater, about a 30 minute drive.
Our hotel, the Clearwater Comfort Suites, is an older hotel and our room is somewhat marginal. We ended up with an "accessible" room that has been converted for use for people with disabilities. Our first clue was that the "peephole" in the door is 2 1/2 ft off of the floor. Likewise, the closet rod is the same height. There is also no tub in the bathroom but a roll-in shower stall and grab-bars all around the room. Since they didn't have any other rooms available, we debated looking for another hotel, but decided to stay. The room is clean, very large and has a TV, refrigerator, microwave, lots of towels, a complimentary breakfast, etc. Besides, we got a got good military discount on the room rate and it appears most everything else in town would have limited avalibility and a much higher price. And, the hotel is packed with Phillies fans which makes for a nice happy atmosphere.
After we unpacked, we went to Clearwater Beach (about 20 minutes away across the causeway) and had dinner at a beachfront restaurant and bar called Frenchy's. The place is right on a very wide white sand beach (Clearwater Beach) and it was packed with people. It is spring break time for many college students and there are a lot of them here. About every other person was also wearing some sort of Philles garb. Spring training is a very big business here and Clearwater is the spring training home for the Phillies. The food at the restaurant was excellent and after watching the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico, we headed back to the hotel for some much needed rest.
