We drove to the Foursquare rum distillery and bottling plant, the first stop on our tour. After a tour of the distillery and plant, we were able to sample 5-year-old rum and 10-year-old rum; the 10–year-old rum was definitely smoother. (We bought a bottle of it at the duty-free port before we boarded the ship in the afternoon.) Barbados is covered with sugar cane fields – the sugar cane is used to make the rum.
Our next stop was Sunbury Plantation House, an 18th century sugar plantation estate. The large manor house has walls 2 ½’ thick to withstand the island’s many hurricanes. The windows are protected inside and out by storm shutters. The house is filled with beautiful 18th century antiques and is used as an event location.
Our last stop on the tour was at the Medford Craft World mahogany factory. Here we watched craftsmen create beautiful objects from native mahogany wood. The trees are protected, so they can only use trees that have been felled by a hurricane or that have to be cut down to make way for road construction. The showroom had many objects for sale, from jewelry to clocks and tables, all out of mahogany.
We drove back to Bridgetown harbor and to the Equinox and will sail this evening at 5:00 pm for the island of St. Kitts.
