New Orleans/FL Trip (Day 18) - Destin, FL

We slept in a little this morning and did the laundry. We had a lot to do since we had no time or way to do laundry during Mardi Gras. They have a nice laundromat in the park near our site, so it was fairly convenient to get it done. It also gave us a chance to get caught up with the blog. We were finished with the laundry about noon and had lunch in the RV. After a short rest we headed out on a tour of the local area and a walk on the beach. The weather is actually pretty nice today but still cool. It is sunny, about 55-60 degrees, and only a light wind.

We visited Henderson State Beach just east of town. It is a really nice park right on the water (Gulf of Mexico). The sand is amazing - nothing like west coast sand. It is very white and very fine grained, made of ground quartz. The water is also very clear and interestingly the area only has one daily tide cycle and a minimal change in the water level during the tide change. The state beach also has the only sand dunes in the area because they have been protected and not been bulldozed for development of the many hotels and condominiums on either side of the park. We took a short walk on the beach, got a few groceries, and went back to the RV for dinner.
