New Orleans/FL Trip (Day 5) - Abilene, TX to Vicksburg, MS

Once again, we were on the road about 7:45 AM. No rain, but patchy fog almost all the way from Abilene to Dallas. We got through the Ft. Worth/Dallas metro area on I-20 at mid-morning without any major traffic delays. We saw some sunshine in the area but it clouded over again as we headed east and it remained cloudy with low ceilings the rest of the day.

The plan was to stop in Shreveport, LA for the night but we made good time, arriving in the area about 2:30 PM. We felt pretty good at that point so decided to press-on to Vicksburg - another 3 hours to the east. We arrived at Vicksburg around 6:00 PM and are staying at the Ameristar Casino RV Park in Vicksburg, MS just across the Mississippi River. The park is adjacent to a major casino and has all the amenities (full hook-ups, free WiFi, 64 channels of cable TV, etc). The park is more functional than scenic but the RV pads are paved. I guess casinos in Mississippi are not limited to Indian gaming tribes as there appear to be about five of them in the local area.

We will be here for the next three nights and will leave Monday AM for the New Orleans campsite at the University of New Orleans which will be our base for the Mardi Gras Good Sam RV Club tour. The plan for tomorrow and Sunday will be to tour the local attractions including the Vicksburg Civil War battlefields. We will also need to do laundry before we leave for New Orleans and plan on watching the Super Bowl Sunday night.

The weather for the weekend looks pretty good with no rain (showers)forecast until Monday. The temperature tonight is 48 degrees and the daytime forecast for the weekend is cloudy to partly sunny with the temperature in the 50's. The southwest and portions of the south we have seen so far have really received a lot of rain this winter. Everything looks/is wet. The streams and rivers are high and the locals we have talked to along the way have all remarked about the exceptionally wet and cold winter they are having this year.

It was a long drive today, but it will be good to sleep-in tomorrow and take a break from driving for awhile.

No pictures today but we should have some tomorrow.
