The Phillies played the NY Yankees today. Both teams have a strong spring training presence in the Tampa Bay area so a large crowd was on-hand - the best of the season so far. The weather was breezzy and mild, 76 degrees and maybe a 10-15 mph north wind. It was actually cool in the upper section where we sit, but warmer in the sun, and a little warmer than the last game. The forecast is for the wind to die down and the temperature reach the 80's by mid-week.
The game was pretty close until the last few innings. The Phillies got out in front and held on to a 6-5 victory. At this stage of spring training you get to see a lot of minor league players, rookies and non-roster players in the game. Today was no exception. The Yankees did not bring a lot of their established players and stars to the game today and their team was mostly composed of players trying to make the team. Alas, the Phillies do not have any star players at the moment. Their roster reflects a lot of hopeful players trying to either make or stay on the team. As the spring training season progresses, the rosters will be reduced, with the best players remaining and the quality of each game improving (At least that is the plan).
We met my Sister Eileen and her friend Linda prior to the game at Lenny's Restaurant for breakfast. The restaurant is right near the ballpark and is always crowded on game days. The place caters to Phillies fans and is decorated in all kinds of Philadelphia Phillies things. Even the waitresses all wear Phillies shirts. The menu is pure Philadelphia diner fare - lots of selections, huge portions and limited healthy food choices. The food was good, but not the kind of breakfast you would want to eat every day. They also serve lunch which is also very good.
After the game we stopped for a few groceries and take-out Italian food for dinner.
There is no game tomorrow so we will sleep-in and decide what we are going to do after we wake-up.
