We normally arrive at the ballpark early. The gates open at 10:30 am and the games start at 1:05 pm. We usually get there around 11:00 am or so and chat with the ushers after getting our complimentary Mimosa (becoming a great way to start the morning). We then walk around the park (it is a 1/2 mile loop), talking to other ushers, observing park activity and enjoying the scene. As you approach the outfield there is a grass berm in both left and right field where people watch the game while sitting on blankets or the grass. Before each game, each team takes batting practice and usually there are lots of people standing on the berm, many with baseball gloves hoping to catch a batting practice homerun. Today as we were walking by a ball cleared the fence, rolled on the berm and landed right at my feet. I was able to pick up the ball before almost getting knocked down by others trying to get it. I would like to say there was some degree of skill involved but will have to settle for dumb luck. Any way, it is a nice souvenir of our spring training adventure. Today was also beer bucket giveaway day. We got two of them and are presently using them as flowerpots on our RV site patio.
After that excitement, we had a leisurely ballpark lunch and settled in the watch the game. The Detroit Tigers are a good American League team so we expected a tough battle with them and were not disappointed. It was a slow game with lots of hits, homeruns and pitching changes. The game lasted over three hours and ended in a tie, 6-6.
After the game, we drove back to the RV, relaxed a little and had leftovers for dinner. No baseball tomorrow - we are going to the beach.
