Florida Spring Training Trip 2016 - Day 34

We went to the beach today on Caladesi Island.

We have visited Caladesi Island several times in the past, maybe 4 times.  The island is located inside Honeymoon Island State Park, about 7 miles west of where we are staying. The islands are essentially barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico and provide a degree of protection to the mainland.  Caladesi Island is only accessible by ferry from Honeymoon Island.  Your ferry ticket guarantees you a scheduled return trip 4 hours after your departure.  If you want to stay longer or shorter, your return trip is on a space available basis.  No one who comes to the island by ferry can stay overnight.  There is a marina on the island run by the state park however, where you can dock your boat for extended stays. The island has over three miles of beach with lots of shells that you can take home with you (as long as nothing is living inside them).  There are also a lot of rattlesnakes on the island, although we didn't see any this year.

After relaxing on the beach, taking beach walks, collecting shells, and getting our feet wet, we took the ferry back to the island, drove back over the causeway and had a late lunch/early dinner at one of the Frenchy's restaurants in the area (Frenchy's Outpost - the northern most of the five Frenchy's area restaurants).  After we left Frenchy's, we were just north of Dunedin, so we decided to finish-up the day with an ice cream cone at Strachen's , a great local ice cream shop.

It's back to baseball tomorrow, then 4 days off to do other Florida things.
