There was no snow on the ground when we got up so it was time to get going. It was still raining pretty hard when we left around 9:00 am and it continued to rain with a short break and partial clearing until we headed south on CA 99 from Sacramento.
The drive from Sacramento to Bakersfield was mostly in moderate to heavy rain, reduced visibility on occasion, and windy. We arrived in Bakersfield around 4:00 pm at the River Run RV Park along the Kern River. The skies cleared later and we had a beautiful sunset.
We have stayed here several times in the past. It is convenient to either going over the Grapevine on I-5 or on CA 58 over the pass at Tehachapi. Our plan was to check the weather and take the best route to Palm Springs on Tuesday.
Unfortunately, the forecast didn't look good on either as both routes were forecasting low snow and possible road closures. So, we decided to stay another night in Bakersfield and try to get over the mountains on Wednesday.
We had dinner in the RV and went to bed early after a long and tiring day and a lot of busy trip preparations - and a lot of rain. We are on our way however.
